Small Business Security Tips
- With computers and networks, choose passwords that are difficult or impossible to guess. Alphanumeric passwords are often the hardest to guess. Give different passwords to all accounts.
- Ensure there is always more than one person to open and close your business.
- Install bright interior and exterior lighting to make all openings visible from both the outside and the inside of the business.
- Know who has a key and restrict access to the front door. Change the lock if a once- trusted employee is discharged. Change locks annually if you have high turnover of employees.
- Consider an access control system rather than keys.
- Consider burglary resistant glass in accessible areas. Unbreakable polycarbonate may work even better, particularly if you have valuable items in window displays. Alternatively glass break detectors provide excellent protection.
- Mark all electronic equipment with a permanent etching of your business name and/or driver’s license. This helps to identify equipment and makes it harder for the thief to sell. Keep a record of all identification numbers off the premises with other important records.
- Make bank deposits often and during business hours. Do not establish a regular pattern. Take different routes at different times during the day.
- Think about what is on a piece of paper before you toss it into the trash. If it is sensitive information, tear it up or use a shredder.
- Install a security system. Monitored security alarms have proven to be the most effective way to combat thieves. The most effective alarms are easily seen from the street, make a loud noise and are linked to a security service that monitors and responds when the alarm is activated.
